The first wooden carved decor, as a work of art, appeared in Ancient Egypt: craftsmen carved various hieroglyphs, made jewelry and crafts, some of which have survived to this day. But such things were either very expensive, since high-quality carving took a lot of effort and time, or primitive. Interior carving became widespread in the mid-17th century: at that time, a revolution took place in metalworking, so tools became more accessible, cheaper and of better quality. Not only the nobility, but also ordinary people begin to decorate their homes and furniture with it.
Today, wood carving in the interior is very popular. Use it to decorate:
Balusters, handrails for stairs and balconies.
Platbands for paintings, mirrors, doors, windows, etc.
Columns, legs, armrests and other decorative items.
Furniture, candlesticks, lamps, clocks.
Skirting boards, baguettes, moldings, etc.
The modern style of decorative carving can combine several options for manual wood processing.
1. Experts call this variety slotted, as well as openwork. This type of carving is used not only to decorate entrance doors, but also to create overlays or various decorative elements.
2. Flat slit. The main feature of this carving is the creation of a flat background with patterns embedded in it. There are several design options.
Contour carving is a pattern made on a flat surface using grooves. They can have either a triangular or semicircular shape.
Bracket thread. It is based on the creation of an ornament on a flat background using notch brackets.
Geometric or triangular carving. Here two thread options are combined. To create decorative elements, craftsmen use knives called jambs. Using jambs, you can create shapes such as diamonds or chains.
In black varnish carving, a flat base is used as a neutral background, which is covered with black paint or a good varnish. All patterns are also created by forming indentations of different lengths and depths.
3. Embossed. All details should protrude above the background so that the surface is beautiful and embossed. This type is one of the most complex types of wood carving, so it can only be performed by very experienced craftsmen.
4. Brownie. Most often used to decorate the facades of houses or create sculptures on wooden elements.
Most often, furniture or interior items with carvings are used in the Baroque or Empire style. They make the premises more pompous and beautiful. But there are other interior design styles in which carved furniture or decorative items will look just great.
Ethnic style presupposes the ability to work with wood and the presence of cultural knowledge. Individually selected and made-to-measure furniture looks simply amazing.
Decorative details made of wood and Victorian style look great. An example of a great addition to the interior is carved picture frames.
However, decorative carvings look more natural in rustic styles. For example, in chalet or country style.
Here you can use both carved furniture and individual household items.
Such items will look no less stylish in the Art Nouveau style. But the main thing here is not to get too carried away and use only a few details.
To summarize, we can say: although wood carving is an ancient art, even today furniture and decorative items decorated in this way remain popular and fit perfectly into the interiors of modern houses and apartments.
